Muscle hypertrophy and pseudohypertrophy.

چکیده
The physical examination always begins with a thorough inspection and patients with potential neuromuscular weakness are no exception. One question neurologists routinely address during this early part of the assessment is whether or not there is muscle enlargement. This finding may reflect true muscle hypertrophy-myofibres enlarged from repetitive activity, for example, in myotonia congenita or neuromyotonia-or muscles enlarged by the infiltration of fat or other tissue termed pseudohypertrophy or false enlargement. Pseudohypertrophic muscles are frequently paradoxically weak. Recognising such a clinical clue at the bed side can facilitate a diagnosis or at least can narrow down the list of potential suspects. This paper outlines the conditions, both myopathic and neurogenic, that cause muscle enlargement.

Denervation pseudohypertrophy of calf muscles associated with diabetic neuropathy
Denervation of muscle usually leads to muscle atrophy with fatty replacement but, uncommonly, also results in muscle hypertrophy or pseudohypertrophy with fatty replacement. We report the ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a patient with diffuse fatty infiltration of calf muscles as a result of denervation pseudohypertrophy. The elevated fasting glucose, neurogeni...

Kocher-Debré-Sémélaigne syndrome (KDSS) is a rare association of muscular pseudohypertrophy and hypothyroidism in children. We report an 11-year-old female child with hypothyroidism and limb muscle pseudohypertrophy with pericardial effusion. The patient presented with hypertrichosis only. She had dull facies and marked hypertrophy of both calves and cervical muscles. Pericardial effusion was c...
متن کاملcysticercosis . pseudohypertrophy in Generalized muscular
Cysticercosis usually presents with epilepsy (MacArthur, 1934) or intermittent obstructive hydrocephalus (Dixon & Lipscomb, 1961). Involvement of skeletal and cardiac muscle in cysticercosis usually remains silent. Although myalgic, nodular and pseudohypertrophic forms have been described, with pseudohypertrophy probably the rarest (Serre et al., 1970), painless, symmetrical massive enlargement...
متن کاملKocher Debre Semelaigne syndrome (case report).
BACKGROUND Kocher-Debre-Semelaigne (KDS) syndrome is a myopathy of hypothyroidism associated with pseudohypertrophy in infancy or childhood. There are few reported cases of KDS syndrome in the literature. STUDY DESIGN We present a 5-year-old boy with poor growth and delayed dental and motor development. There was no family history. On examination he had coarse facies, large protruding tongue,...
متن کاملProximal weakness of the extremities as main feature of amyloid myopathy.
Two patients with muscle weakness caused by amyloid myopathy are described. Characteristic features such as pseudohypertrophy and abnormal firmness, and tumours of muscles were absent. It is suggested that muscle weakness in amyloid myopathy is caused by layers of amyloid covering muscle fibres. In middle aged or elderly patients with proximal muscle weakness the diagnosis of amyloid myopathy s...
